VII Photo zoekt nieuwe leden

The VII photo agency sent out an unusual notice this week seeking photographers who wish to be considered for membership.

It's unusual because VII seldom admits new members. Founded in 2001 as a collective of seven photographers, it has gradually grown to ten. Its charter caps its membership at 14.

"Most people tend to think VII doesn't accept members," says Frank Evers, the agency's managing director. But this year, he says, the agency is considering bringing in more than one new photographer.

Needless to say the selection process is going to be very competitive. Members of VII, who each own a share of the collective, vote for the new members at their semi-annual meeting. New members must spend a year with the agency before becoming full members.

Candidates will be considered at the next meeting of VII, which is in November in Pasadena, Calif.

To be considered, photographers should submit a portfolio of work by September 30. Here are the specific instructions from VII:

"Candidates are considered by the existing members only during the VII annual (or semi-annual) meetings and should submit work on DVD or CD in Jpeg Format compressed at level 8 and at a size no greater than 100 dpi x 16 x 12 inches. No more than 40 images should be submitted and each image should have caption and contextual information embedded in it. Each photographer should submit a brief biography, and tell us what their future intentions are professionally and what motivates them to want to join VII. The submissions should be delivered to one of our bureaus in either New York, or Paris by September 30th, and clearly marked "SUBMISSION FOR VII MEMBERSHIP"
